Bullying Forces Rebecca Black Out Of School

Fame is a battlefield. Internet sensation Rebecca Black joined Katy Perry for some onstage “fun fun fun fun” in Los Angeles on Friday night, but the past few months have been anything but fun and games for the biggest viral star to hit YouTube since Antoine Dodson.

Especially at school.

The 14-year-old dubbed “the worst singer in the world” after the debut of her horror hit song “Friday” earlier this year has become the target of such relentless teasing at the hands of her classmates that she’s been forced out of traditional classes and into homeschooling.

Black’s mother Georgina Marquez endorsed the decision to remove her daughter from school due to the taunting, arguing that Rebecca needs more time to focus on her career, the family told ABC News’ Nightline this week.

“When I walk by they’ll start singing ‘Friday’ in a really nasally voice,” Black says of her experiences at school since she found ‘Net acclaim.

“Or, you know, they’ll be like, ‘Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?’ She certainly did not need that kind of pressure,” Marquez chimed in.

“It’s hard because everyone wants to say ‘Oh my God, I’m this big star now,’” Black said. “But I don’t see it that way. I’m still the same 14-year-old girl that loves to hang out with her friends.”

Black rose to fame last spring when her deliriously-cheesy music video quickly gained over 100 million hits on YouTube, though she has been widely derided for the anthem’s non-sensical lyrics and her uncharismatic performance of them.

A few months ago, police in Rebecca’s native San Diego launched a criminal investigation into the origins of a chain of death threats sent to the aspiring singer.

Black released her latest single, “My Moment,” last month. At press time, the new video has received nearly 22.5 million views…and 276,581 Likes and 492,489 Dislikes.
