Cyndi Lauper Opening Shelter for Homeless

The awesome and fearless Cyndi Lauper will open the True Colors Residence, the first permanent housing facility in New York for homeless LGBT youth.

The shelter is, of course, named after Lauper’s iconic hit song, “True Colors,” and dovetails with her years of activism for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. She did a True Colors tour in 2007 to talk about LGBT issues along with Erasure, The B-52s, the Indigo Girls, Deborah Harry and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and her True Colors Fund is a non-profit for the advancement of LGBT equality.

According to the True Colors Residence website, it’s a new energy-efficient building with indoor and outdoor community space and 30 studio apartments for people aged 18 to 24, who will pay rent based on their income and receive job placement assistance.

“Our primary goal is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and supportive environment that will empower our young residents to be the self-loving, happy and successful individuals they were meant to be,” Lauper wrote about the facility.
