Ocean’s Eleven was a Rat Pack caper movie from 1960 that was of course remade with an all-star cast in 2001. The original movie was pretty much just a chance for Sinatra and his buddies to ham it up in Vegas for a couple of hours, but the remake has a more interesting gang of A-list thieves (especially Matt Damon’s cocky young pickpocket) and gives them a better reason for robbing the casinos (revenge on Andy Garcia’s character for stealing Clooney’s wife). Apart from having a witty and energetic screenplay, enjoyable directorial flare and a lingering soundtrack, the remake is worth watching just for its cast, which reads like a roll call of top Hollywood actors. Just avoid the sequels, especially the sickeningly self-indulgent Ocean’s Twelve.
